This book was a gift for my tween daughter. Most of the text is excellent in that tibia direct, informative, normalizing things like body scent, giving detailed directions on how to thoroughly clean every part of the body, and showing pictures of what regular bodies look like. For this I like the book and think it's helpful for my daughter. What I dislike is the fully naked pictures of women, including one with several tattoos, and the very graffic text about sex and sexual transmitted diseases/infections. If you have conservative values but also find no shame in knowledge about the body, it's functions, and teaching youth about sex (as I do) you may appreciate most of this book. However, I did not appreciate the graffic text about teen sex, which you are free to condone for your family but in our family this is not condoned. Nor did I appreciate the detailed directions about how to use various forms of birth control (though tou may like this for your child). I did appreciate my daughter seeing what regular girls bodies looked like I. Their under garments, just not the naked pictures. Although I did appreciate the up close photograph of a few different vulvas (labias and all) so my daughter could see how normal she is. In the ways that this book is providing knowledge I like it. In the ways that is crosses into condoning teen intimacy I do not. I removed a few pages and talked with my daughter about how we will read them together in the next few wars as she grows older and it becomes more appropriate for her to learn about these things. I hope my review helps families decide how this book may be used for tween-teen girls from families with various values. Thigh we are conservative, this book still has a place in my daughter's life and my dislikes were minor enough to still use it (removing and setting aside the concerning pages for later). Eventually all these things will be learned and I'd rather she learn them at home with me than somewhere else. AWESOME! I have read this with my 13 year old daughter and it's great. It is a remarkable tool to help educate today's young women. As detailed and graphic as it is, it is never vulgar or profane. It is a down to earth reality of what it is to be female. I think every teen should have the opportunity to read this book. Parents can allow their daughter's to learn about their body and the changes that occur in school, from their peers, which will be 99% inaccurate, or parents can be proactive and buy this book. I am a Mom of deep faith and believe in abstinence; however I am not naïve about the reality of what is discussed in today's schools. This book is frank, honest but it also takes away the taboo of discussing the female body. A MUST READ!
Great book for teen girls
One could easily believe there was a conspiracy to make women feel bad about their bodies. Surely a Miss America swimsuit winner would feel completely confident about her body, right? Well, no, so she write the book she wished she'd had as a teen and in college-- an honest, funny, practical, medically accurate, reassuring guide to how women's bodies actually look, smell, feel, behave, and change. Includes real photographs of women without airbrushing. Bulimia may be driven by women comparing themselves to concentration camp thin models. In a survey in a women's magazine, of 1,000 or so women surveyed, not one was happy with the size and shape of their breasts, or the placement of the nipple. Not one. There is something very wrong with that. If you are raising a daughter, especially if she's a teen or a tween, this is a very good book to have. I've seen women torture themselves for hours, comparing themselves to computer-generated fantasy women in women's magazines. Why? Whom does this serve? Not women. French women think themselves beautiful well into their 80's- and they are. Thinking makes it so. The warnings about plastic surgery dangers alone make this book worthwhile.
I bought this for my sixteen year old daughter, who is constantly obsessing over body issues and her weight. What I didn't realize was that this book is so much more than making girls feel good about their bodies. It also offers answers to all those questions that we as parents don't really know how to answer, or perhaps the girls don't know how to ask. She absolutely loved this book, and we spent a lot of time looking at it together, as she would come in and say " oh my gosh mom, did you know......and show me pictures etc... Definately a great choice for teen girls to read.
I bought this book for my 13-year-old daughter because I know there will be times when she will read/need this book. She wasn't too excited about it when I gave it to her, but it is a book that is personal in nature and content and has dead-on photos of body parts. While she may be reticent about reading it now, I'm glad I bought it for her because it is the most comprehensive girl's book I've seen. You really get your money's worth with this book. Whether my daughter's 13 or 20 when she reads the book, I know she has an excellent reference about self identity and body type when she's ready.
This is a wonderful reference for girls. It answers questions they may not even know they have yet. The variety of subjects covered is quite broad and thorough. It has paths for individuals to guide them whether they have an adult to talk with or not. It has just enough information without preaching or pretending to know everything. It is written in a manner that girls will hopefully read the entire book. It doesn't read like a textbook. A nice touch of humor is incorporated. I am glad I purchased this for my 3 tween/teenage girls.
Extremely well written book with lots of appropriate photos. Nancy Redd goes into very tasteful detail re menstruation, piercings, vaginitis, contraception, normal variations in body types (including genital), sex etc. I'm in OB/Gyn and find this a perfect book to just have casually placed on bookshelf. I have 2 daughters, 12 and 14, who don't want to hear about any of this from me, but I know they're reading it (because they don't put it back on the shelf) and getting good information.
Thank you Nancy!
