The Only Living Witness The True Story of Serial Sex Killer Ted Bundy Stephen G Michaud 9781928704119 Books Reviews
I have always been interested in reading true crime books and seemed to always read as much as I can about the most notorious. This being my second Ted Bundy book, I can say it was well worth the read. Some parts were written so well, it almost felt as though you were on the run with him. Other parts were a little graphic, but I guess that comes with the territory while reading about real life serial killers. It wasn't so much his crimes that disturbed me, we all know exactly what Ted Bundy did. It was all the little quirks, courtroom drama and sociopathic behavior that we usually dont hear about on a documentary. I wont give anything away, but this book is worth the read.
Since 1980 Western Australia has only had 5 serial killers so to read about Ted Bundy is both fascinating and horrifying. This book helps to delve deeper into Bundys mind and sometimes it isn't a restful place to be.
Highly recommended.
I'm a fan of true crime and have long been meaning to read Ann Rule's "The Stranger Beside Me." However, after reading reviews of that book and hearing her writing skills were poor and objectivism non-existent, I decided to pick up this book instead. Very glad I did! The two authors were able to interview Ted Bundy and hear about his crimes straight from his mouth, so you get a very first-person look at the mind of a serial killer. They also interviewed everyone from his past, from childhood all the way up until days before his final arrest. It was an incredibly complete look at the evolution of this man and his crimes. Well-written and a tiny bit slow-paced, but the story was interesting enough that it didn't need to be jazzed up or sped through. The revised edition gives you updates on some final confessions and courtroom scenes that weren't in the original, and help bring closure, so I highly recommend this version. I was a little afraid that a book about mass murders would give me nightmares for months (the way Bugliosi's "Helter Skelter" did), but it was presented so matter-of-factly and almost sympathetically that it read more like a pyschological case study than a true-crime novel.
Studying criminals and crime is one thing... Being exposed to the mind and life story of a serial sex murderer is entirely different. You may watch a horror movie and see the special effects of a person being chopped to pieces. You may also see an episode of a crime show depicting the horror of an innocent woman being kidnapped and raped. But the mental images a reader receives when reading about the horror Ted Bundy reaped across the United States in the 70s is astonishing and chilling. It is very easy to see why a nation was scared to leave their house, walk down a dark alley or wonder if their daughter made if home okay from the library at your local college. This book tells all of Ted Bundy's life from his childhood all the way to old sparky. The author writes this book after much in depth research, not to mention countless first hand interviews with the most notorious serial killer of all time himself. A must read for anyone curious about the deranged killer.
This is a well-written and researched account of Ted Bundy's interviews given to the authors, who at one time assisted the defense lawyers in researching Bundy's crimes. Bundy, who refused to confess to the authors, spoke of the murders in the third person, as if he was trying to explain to the authors what kind of mentality would do these crimes and what actions and feelings the murderer would have.
This fiction results in a devastating, chilling account from Bundy himself -- an obviously educated, intelligent and thoughtful person who also happened to be an uncontrollable mass murderer.
I had trouble putting this one down.
It's a good book, it's just that it didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know. All the information in this book is basically all over the internet - so why buy the book. It's the same old generic information reported over and over again regarding Ted Bundy.
A very deep and informative book on one of Americas most notable and notorious serial killers Ted Bundy. The interviews contained with in give us a recounting of Bundys crimes and moves through his active period. It gives a number of personal details and interactions given by Ted that I've not seen anywhere before. Ted of course never confesses directly to any of these crimes while interviewed. Instead giving all view and perspective from a third person's view point. It's wonderful that it also gives a very insiders look at the goings on and emotion from inside death row in the final days leading to the execution. I highly recommend this book for views such as that which give the reality of all horrors of his crimes and the emptiness enveloping him and the situation. Definitely a must read for true crime buffs. Also should even possibly be recommended reading for criminal justice students.
